Malaysia celebrates many holidays which are observed in both the national and state levels. This means that those in the former will be observed throughout the country while the latter ones are observed in their respective states.
On January 1st, the country celebrates New Year’s Day which ushers in 2014. This is followed by the Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday which comes on January 14th. In 2014, the first day of Chinese New Year is on January 31st with public holidays stretching for 2 days that include 1st of February. This is the same day as Federal Territory’s Day which is observed by Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan.
There are no public holidays in the months of March and April until May when Labour Day is celebrated on the 1st of May. On the 13th of May, Buddhists celebrate Wesak Day. A month later, the King’s Birthday is celebrated on the 7th of June and Muslims begin their fasting month at the end of this month.
Hari Raya Puasa is expected to come around on the 28th and 29th of July. The country then celebrates Merdeka (National) Day on the 31st of August and Malaysia Day on the 16th of September. On October 5th, Hari Raya Haji is commemorated. This is then followed by Deepavali on 23rd October and Awal Muharram 2 days later. After that, there are no national public holidays until Christmas which falls on the 25th of December.
As for school holidays, the schools are closed for a week in March between the 22nd and 30th while in May, there will school holidays from the 28th to the 15th of June. In September, the schools close for another week between the 13th and 21st before ending the year with the long break between 22nd November until the fourth of January 2015.
